Bio:

Mitch Ross is one of the most experienced ground Penetrating Radar professionals in the United States. Throughout his career, he seeks to bring new technologies to practical use in the field, bridging the gap between new technologies and practical application.

 

Starting in the industry in 2006, Mitch consistently proves himself an adept problem solver. His attention to detail and consistent methodology make him and his team the go to GPR service provider throughout the Charlotte area. Daily working at mission critical locations of each hospital system, Duke Energy/PNG, Bank of America, & Wells Fargo.

 

In 2013 Mitch started Integrated Scanning Solutions (iSS), a new company focused on utilizing technology & training to partner with their customers. With construction projects happening at a faster pace every year, the need to prevent problems and damage is growing. ISS is a company that performs concrete scanning and private utility locating to anticipate problems that will arise in the construction process and plan around them before they happen.

• GSSI (Salem, NH) Optical Scan Certification

Derek Jarstfer

 

Bio:

Derek Jarstfer's biography is a testament to a life rich in diverse experiences and professional growth. Born near Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Derek's early years were shaped by his family's frequent relocations, a necessity due to his father's career as a defense contractor specializing in computer systems for Ohio-class Fleet Ballistic Missile submarines. This unique upbringing saw Derek living in various parts of the world, from the beaches of Southern California and the lochs of Scotland to the jungles of the Amazon. By the time he graduated high school, Derek had resided at 18 different addresses and traveled to 38 states and 14 countries.

 

After high school, Derek chose to establish a more settled life in North Carolina. He married Rachel, a native of Charlotte, and together they built a fulfilling life. They welcomed their daughters, Hannah and Emma, and their son, Ransom. Derek and Rachel's home is known for its warm hospitality, often hosting gatherings filled with friends, fellowship, and feasting. An enthusiastic board gamer, Derek enjoys exploring and teaching new games.

 

Professionally, Derek made a significant career shift, joining the ISS team after a lengthy tenure in the firearms industry. This transition allowed him to delve into the fields of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic (EM) technology. Derek has thrived in this new environment, appreciating the diverse range of colleagues and job sites, and valuing the continuous opportunities for learning and professional development.

 

Derek holds certifications from the National Utility Locating Contractors Association (NULCA) and is certified in Bigman Geophysical GPR and EM technologies. His professional journey reflects a commitment to growth, adaptability, and excellence in his field.

ASCE SNCB Lunch Meeting - 5/16/24

Yadkin Regional Water Supply Project – Raw Water Infrastructure (Lessons Learned)

The Raw Water Infrastructure Project is part of Union County’s Yadkin River Water Supply Project, which has been developed to ensure a long-term, sustainable water supply to its current and projected future customers in the Yadkin River Basin Service Area in North Carolina.

Key features of the project include a new raw water intake in Lake Tillery, a 45 million gallon per day (MGD) pump station with five vertical turbine pumps, and 29 miles of 42-inch and 54-inch mortar-lined steel raw water pipeline. This new infrastructure will help the raw water travel to the site of Union County’s new water treatment plant to then be distributed to residents in the area.

John Shutak, PE

John is a registered professional engineer and project management professional with over 20 years of public and private sector experience in the design, construction, and management of water and wastewater systems throughout the country. A graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Kansas, John currently serves as the Engineering Division Director for Union County Water in North Carolina.

Chris Clark, PE

Chris is a is a registered professional engineer and project management professional with over 20 years of public and private sector experience in the design, construction, and management of water and wastewater systems. A graduate of Virginia Tech, Chris currently serves as the Director of Water and Wastewater Operations for Union County Water in North Carolina.

ASCE Southern Branch Lunch Meeting:

Please join us for the January Lunch Meeting at Dilworth Neighborhood Grille Thursday, January, 25 2024 with registration/socialization beginning at 11:30 am.  We apologize due to increases in catering and room rental charges we have increased Meeting fees by $5.  The board is currently looking at other locations in the Charlotte area to consider for future meetings.  We welcome any suggestions or recommendations and as fees is one factor for looking at options we are also looking at other factors like service, access, parking, and overall convenience of the location for members to attend during lunch hours.


Topic: Charlotte Douglas International Airport’s Capital Development Program Updates

Presenter:  Ashton B. Watson, P.E., C.M., ACE – Airport Engineering Program Director

Bio:  Ashton Watson has worked for the Charlotte Douglas International Airport for 8 years, and for the City of Charlotte doing Capital Project Management for nearly 8 years with the Department of Transportation (CDOT). He has directed and managed more than 40 projects within the Airport’s Capital Development Program on both the airside and landside, totaling over $1B. He has overseen planning, design and construction of major and complex multi-million dollar runway, taxiway, drainage, and lighting improvement projects. Mr. Watson is experienced with projects involving traffic and transportation engineering, intelligent transportation systems, digital message signs, pavement rehabilitations, rigid and flexible pavement, complex design and construction phasing, fuel facilities, drainage improvements, airfield geometries, airfield lighting, and federal funding. He has been involved with many projects requiring significant coordination with numerous parties, including internal customers, FAA, ATCT, Airline tenants, other tenants, and various review agencies, which speaks to the key to his success = Collaboration!
