Future City Competition - Call for Mentors [Updated 2018-10-26]
Future City starts with a question: How can we make the world a better place? To answer it, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future that showcase their solution to a citywide sustainability issue. Past topics include stormwater management, urban agriculture, public spaces, and green energy.
The 2018-2019 theme is Powering Our Future! Teams will design a resilient power grid for their future city that can withstand and quickly recover from the impacts of a natural disaster.
Participants will complete five deliverables:
a virtual city design (using SimCity)
a 1,500-word city essay
a scale model built from recycled materials
a project plan
a presentation to judges at Regional Competitions in January, 2019
Regional winners represent their region at the Finals in Washington, DC in February, 2019. After completing Future City, student participants are not only prepared to be citizens of today's complex and technical world, but also poised to become the drivers of tomorrow.
There are mentor positions available throughout North Carolina. We are proud to say that ASCE has supported the North Carolina region with volunteers since it began in 2003. We hope you will continue this tradition this year. The Call for Mentors pamphlet details the competition and mentor responsibilities.

Rocky Mount – 2 Schools and 6 Mentors needed.
Durham – 2 Schools and 2 Mentors needed.
Charlotte – 2 Schools and 4 Mentors needed.
Henderson – 1 School and 3 Mentors needed.
Winfall – 1 School and 3 Mentors needed.
Morganton – 1 School and 2 Mentors needed.
Lumberton – 1 School (1 Mentor Assigned wanting one more)
Greensboro – 2 Schools and 2 Mentors needed.
High Point – 2 Schools and 2 Mentors needed.
New Bern – 1 School and 1 Mentor needed.
Wilmington – 1 School and 3 Mentors needed.
