Date: Thursday, April 16, 2015
Topic: Tectonic Geomorphic and Paleoseismic Investigations for the Panama Canal
Time: 5:30 PM socializing begins, 7:00 buffet dinner, 8:00 Eldon's talk
RSVP: Please make reservations with Madeline German (madeline@smithgardnerinc.com) by 5:00 PM on Monday, April 13, 2015
Summary: This talk summarizes five years of geological exploration in Panama to quantify the fault hazards to the Panama Canal and the Canal Expansion Project, using tectonic geomorphic mapping and analysis, paleoseismic trenching, and seismic hazard analysis. Faults that were investigated include the Gatún, Limón, Azota, Pedro Miguel, Miraflores, and Agua Blanca. The talk will illustrate techniques of field reconnaissance, trench-site selection, 3-D trenching of strike slip faults, and how to assemble data into a seismic hazard model. If time is available, an overview of the Panama Canal and the Canal Expansion Project will also be presented.
Location: Natty Greens Pub & Brewing, 505 W. Jones St., Raleigh, NC 27603
Costs: AEG and ASCE members $25, non-members $30, teachers $10, students free with college ID.
To help Professional Engineers in attendance acquire 15 Professional Development Hour (PDH) units per license renewal period in accordance with 21 NCAC 56.1703, we offer one PDH certificate after the presentation.
