Topic:  NCDOT U-2827B I-40 Business Reconstruction & Green Street Pedestrian Bridge

Presentation: Video

Summary: The NCDOT I-40 Business Reconstruction project reimagined and beautified the 1.2-mile gateway into downtown Winston-Salem. The critical interstate overhaul replaced nine highway bridges, modernized interchange configurations, improved highway geometry and drainage, enhanced pedestrian movement with larger sidewalks, provided a multi-use path through downtown, and added two signature pedestrian bridges.

The project significantly improves safety, mobility, and traffic flow while incorporating aesthetic features, including brick facing on retaining walls, decorative arch facades on the highway bridges, landscaped pedestrian facilities, and decoratively lit pedestrian bridges. The Green Street Pedestrian Bridge gracefully spans the highway as a complex double tied arch structure unlike any other in North Carolina.
